The Port Townsend cross country team "again demonstrated that they are a team of distinction," reported coach Alice Fraser, with an Olympic League win Oct. 1 in the first-ever meet hosted at the Port Townsend Golf Club.
The PT varsity boys defeated Bremerton by 21 points and topped North Kitsap by 17 points. Senior Ryan Clarke clinched another overall win in 10:18. Sophomore Brennan LaBrie (11:03) was 4th and senior Mark Streett (11:25) took fifth.
The boys JV placed second to North Kitsap with senior Austin Roemke placing 3rd in his first-ever cross country race. Freshmen Kyle Mackey and Jesus Duran followed only 3 and 14 seconds back.
The Townsend girls varsity ran with only 5 members, and placed 2nd overall, 3 points behind North Kitsap. Senior Hannah Trailer took the overall win, freshman Ally Bradley placed 3rd overall, by 18 seconds.
The runners competed Oct. 4 in the Twilight Invitational in Marysville, one of the largest in Washington with 63 schools attending. The PT varsity boys placed fifth in the 5k Class 1B, 1A,-2A race, bringing home a team trophy. They were led by Ryan Clarke (16:26, 9th) and Brennan LaBrie (17:42, 27th) with the rest of the PT varsity all running under 19 minutes and placing in the top 60 of the 116-runner field.
The girls varsity was led by Hanna Trailer (21:49, 25th) and Ally Bradley (22:14, 32nd) for a 9th place team finish. Sophomore Hannah Hooten (24:33, 68th) had a strong season debut, improving her best from last year by more than 40 seconds.
The meet's first race was the freshman/sophomore JV boys in which PT had 5 runners. Freshmen Jesus Duran (20:25) and Kyle Mackey (22:02) were the top Redhawk finishers. In the freshman/sophomore JV girls race sophomore Shauna Lynch recorded her 5k best by more than two minutes (29:05). The top PTHS finishers in the junior/senior JV boys race were senior Joel Mackey (19:30) and junior Adam Braude (20:35).
NEXT: PT runs Oct. 8 in Sequim with the host program and Port Angeles, and hosts Kingston and Olympic, Wednesday, Oct. 15 at Port Townsend Golf Club.
